These skills are also expensive as they require bound materials that can only be bought with bound coin. Blacksmith, craftsman, and tailor are all interdependent to some degree, so you'll either need a supportive guild (hint) or buy materials from the open market. Herbalism and Poison Maker have their own harvest skills, so they're good choices if you don't want to make anything and just sell what you find. Doesn't mean it doesn't happen, though, and I' in one of the friendlier parts of the world from what I hear (Qiandeng). Being PvPed while you're farming would hurt, but I've yet to see anyone do that. In case it isn't clear, you only lose the time it takes to run back from the resurrection spot if you're defeated, or a little coin if you decide to res on-the-spot. The only time you really need food is if you're about to take part in PvP or instances, or if you're going to do a ton of gathering/crafting/cultureing(?) in short order. You can still quest, craft, fight in open world PvE, etc. You're reduced to 75% of your max HP and your vigor replenishes slower. Starving isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be.
